Even though newsgroups and message boards have been around since the dawn of the internet, the term “social media” is understood to refer to online applications such as (and I quote from WikiPedia, itself a social site):
Google Groups (reference, social networking), Wikipedia (reference), MySpace (social networking), Facebook (social networking), Last.fm (personal music), YouTube (social networking and video sharing), Second Life (virtual reality), Flickr (photo sharing), Twitter (social networking and microblogging) and so on.

- Mess With Your Head is a module within Bebo, social networking site targeted at teenagers.
- We also built a Bebo game as part of the Creme Egg online campaign.
- New Media Knowledge is a collaborative media publishing site for the digital industry.
