The EU/NATO approach to solving The Cyprus Problem can be summarized as “Swamp them money. Rich people don’t fight”. And nowhere is this more apparent than the capital, Lefkosia, an intriguing city.
A bit Berlin-like, with its wall right in the middle, it is very affluent, and therefore posh bars and furniture shops abounds. Interesting to see how the governments on the two sides use the aid money - the Turks use it to restore mosques and hamams in the north, and the Greeks use it for cathedrals in the south. One very interesting place was a Frankish cathedral converted centuries ago to a Mosque - they exterior was kept, but the interior was arranged along a different axis and had all decorations pulled out and replaced with calligraphy.
If you get a chance, Lefkosia is definitively worth spending a day or two.
